Hot pink is doing the work here. It sits behind everything, sprayed in fast, and it pushes the whole picture forward before you’ve figured out what you’re looking at.
Then you see it. A hummingbird, mid-air, drinking out of a horchata cup. One word brushed onto the side of the cup: DULCE. Painted in perspective, curving with the paper cup like somebody wrote it there with a marker at the counter.
Look at the wings, then look at the beak
The wings are gone. Erased by their own speed, just smear and overspray. But the beak is needle-sharp, right in the drink. That split is the whole piece – a body moving too fast to see, aimed at one exact point of sugar. Chris lets the spray bleed under his stencil edges, and he leaves it. That bleed is the time he did not have. Underneath, a torn edge shows an older layer, because a wall is never blank, it is a stack of what was there before.
He works one way and stops. Fat black brush-line first, colour sprayed in behind it, one phrase lettered, done. As he says it: I learned to make things fast because you do not get long on a wall. Critics gave it 8.33. Valentina: “A lively burst of color captures the hummingbird’s energy perfectly.”
Over the bar, over the fridge, over the kegerator
Smooth matte paper, non-reflective, so a lamp or a TV across the room doesn’t blow a shine across it. Printed edge to edge with no white border – the colour runs right to the rim, so it reads loud even bare on the wall. Rolled in a tube, ready for whatever frame you already have, or pin it up as is.
Landscape: 16×12 in (41×30 cm) $29, 24×18 in (61×46 cm) $49, 32×24 in (81×61 cm) $69. Rule of thumb – go about two-thirds the width of whatever furniture sits under it. Made to order, up to ten business days, free shipping in the continental US. It’s a high quality print of a digital artwork, and the price on it is the price.
One honest thing
It’s loud and it has an opinion. In a matched, polished room where everything agrees with the sofa, this will start an argument. In a kitchen, a bar or a game room with some grit in it, people will read the cup out loud and laugh.
If that’s your wall, take it home. If you want to see how he letters the rest of them, go through what else Chris has made – or follow @chrisvega.art and you’ll catch the next one first.
One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.
Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 6 other works by Chris Vega available.
