Meet Chris Vega

The Studio

Where Chris works.

A studio in downtown LA. Silk screens in racks, spray cans sorted by colour, one wall layered in torn posters like the city’s memory.

The Story

Get to know Chris.

What inspires him

The corner taco stand, the car meet, the paletero, the abuela’s slipper. What people in LA actually say to each other, and the animals that would say it if they could.

How the work gets made

Thick black brush line over sprayed colour fields with drips, then exactly one phrase hand-lettered into the picture. No characters that come back; every piece gets its own.

Brush and spray: thick black brush line over sprayed colour fields with drips, then one phrase hand-lettered into the picture in bold brush lettering.
The Practice

What makes a Chris Vega a Chris Vega.

Line

One fat brush

The character is drawn once. No corrections, no outlines twice.
Spray

Colour behind

Sunset orange, turquoise, purple, pink. Drips are allowed.
Word

One phrase

Exactly one thing written, in the language it was said in.

“Every layer is somebody answering back. That argument is the picture.”

— Chris Vega
