Hover Defying Thirst: the hummingbird that stops for horchata

A hummingbird mid-flight, pulling nectar from a horchata cup like it was always meant to.

I painted a hummingbird drinking horchata because both are too fast to photograph properly.

I am Chris Vega. I paint LA street pleasures in thick black cartoon line over spray fields, one bilingual phrase hand-lettered into every piece. This one is about the things that make you stop when you should keep moving.

The cup says DULCE and I meant it

The hummingbird hovers at a horchata cup. Not a flower. A street drink in a foam cup with the word DULCE painted across it in my hand.

Ruby called it vibrant street-art vibe and fluid motion. That is half right. The motion is there because I laid the spray first and drew the bird over it while it was still moving in my head. But the vibe comes from the cup.

Horchata is the drink you stop for on a hot block when you are supposed to be somewhere else. The hummingbird does not care. It pulls sugar from wherever it finds it.

I draw animals like cartoons on purpose

The hummingbird is a thick black brush line, the kind that looks like it was done in one pull. It was not. I went over it three times to get the weight right.

Cartoons read faster than realism and I need the reader to get the joke before they think too hard. A hummingbird drinks from flowers. This one drinks horchata. The line has to be clear enough that the substitution lands.

Valentina said lively burst of color and she is right. The spray field behind the bird is orange fading into pink, laid down wet and fast. The black line over it is what holds it still.

The word is painted, not added after

DULCE is hand-lettered into the cup in the same black brush I used for the bird. One word. Sweet.

Charlotte called it vibrant street energy and humor. The humor is in putting the word on the cup and letting the hummingbird confirm it. If I had written more, it would have been explaining.

Hover Defying Thirst is a landscape poster, printed on museum-grade archival matte paper with pigmented inks, shipped flat and unframed. Free shipping in the continental US.

This is for someone who wants a piece that reads as funny without trying to be clever, and a wall that can take some colour and motion. Not for a room that needs the art to sit quietly next to the furniture.
