Somebody reached for the taco. One time.
That is the moment you have walked in on. The bulldog has planted himself over it, paws set, not moving, and steam is still curling up off the thing he is guarding.
Read the jersey
Two words are painted across the chest of the Raiders jersey: MI TACO. Not a caption stuck above the picture. Lettered onto the shirt itself, curving with the fabric, like it was stitched there. That is Chris Vega’s whole method — one phrase, painted into the scene, and then he stops. A line of text doing more than decoration. Read it, it is the point.
Now the part most people miss. The steam hides just enough of the face. You never get the full expression, so your eye drops to the stance instead, which is where he wants it. Behind the fat black brush-line: sprayed orange, turquoise, purple and hot pink, drips and overspray, laid over a torn-poster surface with an older layer showing through. A wall is never blank. It is a stack of what was there before. “I learned to make things fast because you do not get long on a wall.”
What happens once it is up
Put it in the kitchen, over the bar, in the game room. People laugh mid-sentence, then somebody says mi taco out loud about something of their own, and means it. Critic Charlotte: “The bulldog’s determined stance and vibrant palette make this piece irresistibly eye-catching.” Three critics averaged 8.67.
Getting it on the wall
Matte canvas with a visible weave, stretched over solid wood an inch and a quarter deep. The image wraps the edges, so there is no frame to buy and no bill you did not expect — one nail, two minutes, straight from the box. Matte, so a lamp opposite gives you the painting back instead of a glare.
Portrait. A good rule: the picture wants to be about two thirds the width of whatever sits under it. 18 x 24 in (46 x 61 cm) is preselected and suits most walls, $149. Small spot, 12 x 16 in (30 x 41 cm) at $129. Over a bar, 24 x 32 in (61 x 81 cm) at $229. A high quality print of a digital artwork, made to order in up to ten business days, free shipping in the continental US. The price on the work is the price.
One honest thing
It is loud and it has an opinion. In a polished room where everything matches the sofa, it will argue. In a room with some grit in it, it belongs.
