You just walked through the gate and six people turned around at once.
That’s the second this picture is frozen in. The backyard is full. The fence behind everybody says FAMILIA in fat brush letters, painted right onto the boards, running with the slats. And up in the corner, a cartoon sun has put on sunglasses.
The sun is having a better time than anyone
Go look again. Everybody at that party is doing party-face. The sun is the only one genuinely thrilled to be there, which is exactly how a backyard full of tías feels when you’re the one who showed up. Chris Vega drew that grin on purpose and then stopped drawing.
Look at the fence lettering too. It’s cut sharp but the spray bleeds under the edge, and there’s a torn patch where an older layer shows through. A wall is never blank, it is a stack of what was there before. He says it himself: every layer I put down, somebody tore one off first. Ruby, scoring it 8.67 with the rest of the critics, put it this way: “The vibrant colors and dynamic composition capture the heart of LA Chicano street culture.”
Over the bar, over the beer fridge
This one belongs above something people stand around. Guests read the fence out loud before they ask who made it. Here’s a rule worth keeping: measure whatever sits underneath and go about two-thirds of its width.
Getting it there
A high quality print of a digital artwork on archival matte paper with pigment inks. Matte means no glare bouncing back at you from the kitchen light. Printed edge to edge, so the orange runs right off the paper and it looks right pinned up bare, or slid into a frame you already own.
18 x 24 in (45.7 x 61 cm) is the one most people take, at $49. Smaller 12 x 16 is $29, bigger 24 x 32 is $69. The price on the work is the price – no bidding, no surprise at checkout, free shipping in the continental US. Made to order, up to ten business days, so nobody else on your street has this one.
One honest thing
It’s loud. If your room is matched and polished and you want art that keeps its opinions to itself, this will argue all day.
If that made you laugh instead, take it home. Or go see the rest of what Chris has lettered – follow him and the next phrase lands in front of you first.
One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.
Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 6 other works by Chris Vega available.
