The red finds you first. One small lighthouse, the only warm thing in a whole frozen picture, and your eye goes straight to it before you have decided to look at anything.
Then it goes there twice. Because the ice does not cover everything.
The channel nobody expects
Look along the strip of ice. A narrow line of black water has cut through it, and the lighthouse is sitting in that water too – upside down, softer, a second red. That is the detail people describe twice when they tell someone else about it. Without that split, the ice would just be still. With it, the whole picture becomes about light landing somewhere it had no business landing.
Above all of it, the sky does the shouting. Green, magenta and cold blue poured in flowing bands, flat colour that moves without a single raised ridge. Sofia works this way on purpose: pour the sky, let it run, then paint two or three real things at the bottom edge with a hard, exact line, and stop. She does not fill the rest. The emptiness is the point.
