Coral. One narrow wedge of it, entering at the top right, and it runs the entire picture.
Everything else in this piece behaves. Flat blocks of colour, hard clean edges, sitting on a grid you can feel even though nobody drew it for you. Then that coral slice comes in from off-frame and cuts across the whole arrangement like a correction someone made in pen.
The part you only see the second time
Every other block lines up with something. Follow any edge and it agrees with an edge somewhere else. The coral agrees with nothing. It is the only shape in the work that refuses the grid, and it is placed so precisely that you can tell it was chosen, not spilled.
That is the whole idea of the title. No second attempt. Alex Ward builds these as propositions rather than pictures — structures that are internally rigorous and completely impossible to actually build. Flat, matte, no shading, no depth tricks. Just proportion and colour that has been argued with until it gave in.
