It’s late. The kind of late where the air still hasn’t cooled off and the only light on the block is coming off a taco stand.
A coyote in an apron is working it. Behind him the whole sky is sprayed on – sunset orange bleeding into turquoise, purple, hot pink, with drips running down where the paint got greedy. Painted onto the stand itself, in fat brush letters that lean with the wood: OPEN LATE.
Watch what his body is doing
He’s leaning in. Not standing there waiting for business – leaning, like he’s been expecting you specifically and you’re finally here. All the friendliness is in that tilt. And then Chris does the mean thing: he runs a ribbon of steam right across the snout, exactly where the face should be. So you never find out. He’s either smiling or sizing you up, and the steam won’t tell you.
That’s Vega’s whole move. One character drawn in a thick black brush line, wobbly on purpose, bristle marks left in. Spray the colour behind it. Letter one phrase and stop. Ruby put it well – the words sit in the picture like they were always painted on that stand, not stuck over the top of it.
Where it ends up living
This one goes in kitchens, bars and game rooms. It’s a joke that keeps working – guests read the sign out loud, then they ask about the coyote, then they ask where you got it. Good luck getting a quiet dinner out of it.
Getting it up there
A high quality print of a digital artwork on museum-grade archival matte paper – smooth and non-reflective, so a lamp or a window opposite gives you the picture back instead of a glare. Printed edge to edge with no white border, so the colour runs right out to the sides and nothing looks trimmed. It ships rolled in a tube, ready for whatever frame you already own, or pin it up bare like the wall it came from.
Most people take the 20×16 in (50.8 x 40.6 cm) – $49. Go 24×18 in (61 x 45.7 cm) if it’s going over a bar or a stove. Made to order, so nobody else on your street has this one, and shipping inside the continental US is free.
One honest thing
It’s loud. Hot pink and turquoise loud. If every room in your place is soft grey, this will start a fight with it and win.
If that sounds like your kitchen, take it home. If you’re circling, go see what else Chris has painted – or follow him and you’ll catch the next one before it’s anywhere else.
One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.
Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 6 other works by Chris Vega available.
