Grandma never made it into the frame. Just her slipper, mid-air, sole first, about a foot from its target.
The dog is behind a chain-link fence. Ears flat, eyes huge, the whole cartoon face broken into little diamonds by the wire. On the wall behind him, in fat hand-brushed letters that lean with the wall itself: LA CHANCLA.
The bit you notice second
The slipper is aimed at you. Not sideways across the picture the way a thrown thing usually gets drawn – the sole is flat to the viewer, coming out of the canvas. So you are not watching the dog get it. You are the dog. Chris let the fence do the hiding, too: you can read panic on that face without ever reading a specific face, which is why every single person who looks at it decides it is a dog they used to know.
That is how Vega works. One animal drawn once with a fat wobbly brush, spray-paint sunset behind it – orange, turquoise, hot pink – drips left where they landed, one phrase lettered onto something solid, and then he stops. Loud on the outside, precise underneath. As Valentina put it, it “embodies Chris Vega’s LOUD LINE style perfectly.”
Where it ends up living
Bar wall, kitchen, game room. It works because nobody who grew up with a chancla needs the caption. They laugh first and read the wall second, and then they tell you their own version of the story, which is really the point.
Getting it up there
Canvas with a visible weave, stretched an inch and a quarter deep over solid wood, so the spray fields and the drips have something to sit in. It ships stretched and ready to hang – one nail, done, no frame to buy and no glass bouncing your ceiling light back at you. The colour wraps the edges, so it looks finished from the side too. Made to order, so it is not hanging on your neighbour’s wall.
Most people take the 16×20 (40.6 x 50.8 cm), which is $149. There is a 12×16 at $129 if the spot is small and an 18×24 at $229 for a wide wall. A high quality print of Chris’s digital artwork, free shipping in the continental US, up to ten business days to make plus delivery.
One honest thing
It is a joke about getting hit with a shoe, painted at full volume. If you want quiet neutrals, this will fight everything in the room.
If you already say the phrase out loud, take it home. Otherwise have a look at the rest of Chris’s wall – or follow him and you will see the next one before it goes up.
One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.
Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 6 other works by Chris Vega available.
