The slipper is aimed at you. Not sideways across the picture the way a thrown thing usually gets drawn – the sole is flat to the viewer, coming out of the canvas. So you are not watching the dog get it. You are the dog. Chris let the fence do the hiding, too: you can read panic on that face without ever reading a specific face, which is why every single person who looks at it decides it is a dog they used to know.
