By four in the afternoon the room has gone quiet, and there is still a man on your wall taking a cloud’s measurements.

He is dressed for the job. Sleeves, posture, the patience of someone who has done this a thousand times. The cloud hangs in front of him, small and weightless, and a burnt-orange measuring tape is coiled around it as if it could be pinned to a pattern. Birds hold the pins. They are holding them properly.

The part you only see once someone tells you

Look at his sleeve. It is torn sideways into pixel blocks, the colour split into red and green and blue like a signal breaking up. Everything else in the picture obeys paint – the folds, the light, the perspective, all of it behaving. One thing does not. That is Zara Moon’s rule: build the scene like a stage set, obey one impossible idea completely, then glitch exactly one element so you know whose hand it is.

The title is the clue, and she writes the title first. Absurd precision, applied to the one thing that cannot be measured. Ruby put it well – it “invites conversation.” You will have that conversation often.

Once it is up

Canvas, stretched over solid wood an inch and a quarter deep, with the image running around the edges so there is nothing bare to look at from the side. It arrives ready to hang – one nail, two minutes, no framer and no surprise bill. Matte, so a lamp or a window gives you the painting back instead of a bright white blur.

Portrait. Most people take the 16 x 20 (41 x 51 cm) at $149. The 18 x 24 (46 x 61 cm) if the wall is tall and empty, the 12 x 16 (30 x 41 cm) for a hallway you pass twice a day. A high quality print of a digital artwork, made to order for you, free shipping in the continental US, up to ten business days before it leaves.

One honest thing

The ground is velvet-dark. If your taste runs to pale, calm and literal, this will unsettle the room rather than settle into it. If you like being asked questions, it is already yours.

Take it home, or spend ten minutes with the rest of Zara’s scenes first – or follow her, and you will see the next impossible rule before anyone else does.
