The lanterns are on fire, and they are burning underwater.
The rain has stopped. The canal alongside the Philosopher’s Path has gone completely still, so every lantern above the water has a twin below it, hanging upside down in the dark, perfectly calm. Fire where fire should not be.
The bit you notice second
Follow the doubled lights back into the picture. They line up like rungs, one gold pair after another, and they pull your eye deeper than a landscape this size should be able to go. Right at the end of them is a single figure under an umbrella, mid-step, walking away.
Yuki paints it that way every time. One person, never two, always far off and always leaving. She builds the wet stone first in thick knife slabs, then lays the light on top of it, and the figure goes in last. The path is what the painting is about. The walker is just proof somebody took it.
As Ruby put it: “The indigo and plum palette, punctuated by warm lantern golds, creates a mesmerizing visual journey through a rain-soaked path.”
In your hallway, at seven at night
Turn a lamp on near it and the golds lift straight off the indigo. It reads quiet in daylight and warm after dark, which makes it the rare picture that suits a hallway you pass forty times a day. People slow down at it. That is what the doubling does.
Getting it up
Matte canvas, stretched an inch and a quarter deep over solid wood, and the image runs around the sides so there is no bare edge to hide. It arrives ready to hang, so one nail and you are done. No frame, no glass, no reflection of your own ceiling light. Matte means you see the rain, not your lamp.
Most people take the 20×16 in (51 x 41 cm) at $149. Smaller 14×11 in (36 x 28 cm) is $129; the 24×18 in (61 x 46 cm) is $229 if the wall is wide. High quality print of a digital artwork, made to order, free shipping in the continental US, up to ten business days before it leaves.
One honest thing
It is dark. Indigo, plum, wet stone, with the gold doing all the work. If you want a bright, breezy wall, this is not it. If you like a room that gets deeper in the evening, take it home. Otherwise have a look at the rest of Yuki’s lantern paths, or follow her and you will catch the next one first.
One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.
Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 6 other works by Yuki Tanaka available.
