Anya could have blended that scarlet into the blue. She had every chance. She left it.
So there it is – one red gesture torn straight across a cold field, edges raw, the two colours never agreeing about anything.
The part you only see the second time
Follow the red from where it enters to where it stops. It does not fade out politely. It ends. The paint looks thick where it lands, ridges standing up off the surface, drag marks where the brush ran out of load and kept going anyway. That is the decision. Most painters would have gone back and softened the join. She didn’t return to it.
The blue does the real work, though. It is cold – properly cold – and it is what makes the red feel like it happened to you rather than in front of you. Anya works at scale, one dominant mark and one answering mass, colour that collides instead of mixing. Paint laid down fast and left alone. As Ruby put it: this is what happens when you stop being polite.
What happens in the room
Conversation slows near it. Not because it is pretty. Because there is no way to walk past a thing that big and red and pretend you didn’t see it. Put it where people arrive and it does the greeting for you.
Light matters here. Side light rakes across the thick marks and the ridges throw small shadows, so the picture is a bit different at nine in the morning than at six at night.
On your wall by next week or so
Canvas, stretched over solid wood an inch and a quarter deep, and it comes ready to hang. One nail, no framer, no glass, no surprise bill. The image wraps the sides, so it looks finished from the doorway and from the angle you actually see it at. Matte, which means a window opposite gives you the painting back and not your own ceiling light.
Landscape. Most people take the 20×16 in (51×41 cm) at $149. Go to 24×18 in (61×46 cm), $229, if the wall is wide and empty. Small spot, 14×11 in (36×28 cm), $129. Free shipping in the continental US. Made to order, so nobody on your street has this one.
One honest thing
It is loud. If you want a room that soothes you, this will fight it every day. If you find calm boring, it is already yours.
Take it home, then. Or spend ten minutes with the rest of Anya’s work on printasso.com – and follow her, because the next one lands with no warning.
One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.
Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 3 other works by Anya Volkov available.
