Your eye lands on the thin red stripe first, and that stripe has no business being this important.
It is narrow. Off to one side. And it is holding up a large block of ochre that should, by any sensible reading, fall over. A band of slate grey sits between the warm colours, keeping them apart rather than blending them.
The part that could not be built
Follow the red up to where it meets the ochre. The join sits off-centre, and the strip is far too slim to carry that much mass. That is the point. It is a form that could not stand as a building — the one place Alex Ward lets the precision lie.
Now look inside the ochre itself. No shading, no drift, no soft spots. The colour was mixed once, in full, before the canvas, and laid down as a single decision. Every edge was taped and measured before any colour went down; nothing was drawn freehand. As he puts it: every line is measured, every proportion is a decision.
In a room that is already finished
This is the one exact thing a settled room is missing. It sits well above a console, a desk, the end of a hallway. The flat matte colour does not shift with the light, so it looks the same at nine in the morning as it does at six. Guests ask about the red strip. Every time.
Charlotte, one of our critics, signed hers at 8.33: “A visually arresting piece, leveraging color and proportion with precision.”
The numbers, plainly
A high quality print of a digital artwork on museum-grade archival matte paper. Non-reflective, so a window opposite gives you back the colour, not your lamp. Printed edge to edge with no white border, so it reads as one clean block in whatever frame you already own — or pinned up bare, which suits it fine.
Portrait. 12 x 16 in (30 x 41 cm) is $29. 18 x 24 in (46 x 61 cm) is $49 and comes preselected. 24 x 32 in (61 x 81 cm) is $69. A rule worth keeping: aim for about two-thirds the width of the furniture underneath. Made to order, up to ten business days plus delivery, rolled in a tube. Free shipping within the continental US, and the price on the work is the price.
One honest thing
This is not for a cluttered or sentimental room, and not for anyone who wants to see the hand shake. Nothing here wobbles.
If that sounds like your wall, take it home. If you are still weighing it, look through the rest of Alex’s work — or follow him, and the next one arrives in front of you first.
One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.
Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 6 other works by Alex Ward available.
