The diagonal was decided before any colour went down. That is the part people get wrong.
It looks like a slip. One warm amber line, running across a cool grid of blocks that otherwise behave perfectly. A mistake that got left in.
It isn’t. The grid was taped and measured first, and the diagonal answers to it. Every line is measured. Every proportion is a decision.
What a quick glance misses
Look at the edges where amber meets the blocks beside it. No bleed, no feather, no soft spot where a hand wobbled. Then look inside any single block: no gradient, no shading, no drift. Alex Ward mixes every colour in full before it ever reaches the canvas, so each block is one decision, laid down once.
Now notice the proportion repeating across the piece. Same interval, again and again, so the diagonal has something rigid to argue with. The critic Charlotte put it well: “The amber diagonal cuts through the grid with precision, creating a compelling focal point that blends order with a touch of defiance.” Critics averaged it 8 out of 10.
Living with it
It holds still. Morning or lamp light, the colour doesn’t shift on you, and the eye goes straight to the amber every time you pass. Hang it above a console, a desk, a bed. Guests tend to ask whether the line is crooked on purpose. It is.
The practical part
Matte canvas, an inch and a quarter deep, stretched on solid wood and ready to hang out of the box. One nail, two minutes, no framer and no surprise bill. The image wraps the sides, so the edges look finished from across the room. Matte means a window opposite gives you the picture back, not your own lamp.
Portrait. Most people take the 18×24 in (46×61 cm) at $149; 12×16 in (30×41 cm) is $129 and 24×32 in (61×81 cm) is $229. A high quality print of a digital artwork, made to order in up to ten business days, free shipping in the continental US. The price on the page is the price.
One honest thing
This is for someone who notices when a line is off. In a sentimental, busy room it will look stern, and if you want to see the hand shake, you won’t find it here.
If that sounds like your wall, take it home. If you’d rather sit with it, look through the rest of Alex’s grids, or follow @alexward.studio and see the next one before anyone else.
