At four in the afternoon the light comes in low and flat, and this is the hour the picture was built for.
The cobalt holds steady. The edges stay sharp. Nothing in it softens the way a photograph would, because there is no gradient anywhere in it to soften.
You are looking up at a structure from underneath. Beams, intervals, the undersides of things. Every block answers to the same grid, over and over, until the whole frame feels like it was agreed on in advance.
Then there’s the yellow
One diagonal beam cuts across the whole system. It is the only line in the piece that disobeys. Everything else runs square, and that single yellow break is what stops the picture being wallpaper.
Follow it to the corner and you’ll notice the geometry doesn’t resolve. This structure could not stand up as a building. That is the one place Alex Ward lets the precision lie. “Every line is measured. Every proportion is a decision,” he says, and he means it right down to the hard edge with no bleed – taped and measured before any colour went down, never drawn freehand. Ruby called it “a commanding perspective and precise execution.” Charlotte said it “could anchor any modern space.”
Straight out of the box, onto the nail
Matte canvas stretched over solid wood, an inch and a quarter deep, image wrapping the sides – so there is no frame to buy and nothing to measure. One nail, two minutes. Matte means a window opposite gives you back the cobalt instead of your own ceiling light.
Most people take the 24 x 18 in (61 x 46 cm) at $149. Go to 32 x 24 in (81 x 61 cm) if the wall is wider than a sofa; 16 x 12 in (41 x 30 cm) suits a narrow stretch of hallway. Made to order, up to ten business days, free shipping in the continental US. The price on the work is the price.
Who should skip it
If you like seeing the hand shake, this is not for you. It is flat, exact and unsentimental, and in a cluttered or sentimental room it will look like a correction.
In a room that is already finished and needs one exact thing, take it home. Or look through the rest of Alex’s work – follow him and the next one reaches you first.
