Your eye goes to the water first, and it goes there because the wake is the brightest thing in the picture.
The last ferry has just pulled out of Positano. Behind it, the houses climb the cliff in terracotta and ochre and rose, stacked one on another the way they actually are. Above them, orange sky cooling into deep blue. The lamps are coming on.
Count the windows
Only one of them is warmer than everything else. One window, just lit, sitting there while the rest of the town goes blue. Once you see it you cannot unsee it, and it is the reason the picture aches a little. Somebody is home. You are on the boat.
Then look at the water again. Marco builds the wake in thick knife-dragged ridges, so heavy the paint looks like it is standing off the surface and casting its own small shadow. And notice where he is standing to paint it: one step down an alley, one table back. Never the postcard angle. As Ruby put it, the knife work in the water captures the light exquisitely, making the surface as much the subject as the scene.

It runs warm from across the room. In daylight the cliff comes forward. Under a lamp at night, the wake and that one window do all the talking, and people walking past stop and ask where you were.
