There is no face in this picture. No train either. Just a figure turned away on a platform, shoulders set, waiting the way you have waited a hundred times.
Everything is grey. Hard, clean, flat London grey, cut with edges so sharp they look printed by a machine that never blinks. The platform. The coat. The whole morning.
Then the umbrella goes off.
The bit you notice second
Orange, magenta, cyan and yellow, pouring out of the one thing this person chose to carry. And it does not stay put. Follow the drips down and they run toward the platform edge, out of the shape, off toward the drop. That is where your eye lands the second time, and it is why the picture keeps you longer than it should.
Kai builds the grey world with a ruler, then lets exactly one thing go. Never the face, never the sky. One burst, always leaving the subject rather than decorating it. Charlotte, one of our critics, called it “a captivating visual metaphor” – which is the polite way of saying it looks like somebody’s idea escaping through their hands.
What it does in your room
Hang it where you get ready in the morning, or over the desk. It does not shout a slogan at you. It just carries a lot of energy in a small footprint, and it makes the grey things near it look intentional instead of accidental. People will ask about the umbrella. Every single time.
Getting it up
Canvas stretched over solid wood, an inch and a quarter deep, and the image wraps the sides so there is nothing to frame and nothing to buy. Out of the box, one nail, done. Matte surface, so a lamp or a window opposite gives you the burst back instead of a glare.
Landscape, and most people take the 20×16 (51 x 41 cm) – $149. Go 24×18 if the wall is wide. Made to order, so nobody on your street has this one, and shipping in the continental US is free.
One honest thing
The colour is loud. If you want calm and soft on your walls, this will fight you.
If loud is the point, take it home. Or have a look at the rest of Kai’s greys first – and follow him, so the next burst reaches you before it reaches anyone else.
