Everything in this picture is the same cold blue. The ground, the air, the girl. One window in the little floating house is vermillion, and your eye goes straight back to it every time, like a coal in a dark room.

She is wearing a paper crown. She is holding a house on a string, the way a child holds a balloon, and the house is pulling upward.

Then look at her shadow

It is falling the wrong way, and it has been torn sideways into pixel blocks, the colour split into red and green edges. One thing in the frame has stopped being paint.

So there are two broken rules, and they argue with each other. A house that floats. A shadow that glitches down. You end up trying to work out which one broke first, and there is no answer, which is the joke and also the serious bit.

Zara Moon builds these like stage sets. One costumed figure, one impossible rule obeyed all the way through, and exactly one element glitched so you know whose it is. The title is always the clue. As Charlotte put it, the surreal narrative and visual wit will surely spark conversations on any statement wall.

What happens once it is up

Nobody walks past this one silently. Guests find the house first, then the crown, then the shadow, and that is when they go quiet for a second. You will explain it at least a dozen times, and you will start enjoying it.

Getting it on your wall

Canvas, stretched over solid wood an inch and a quarter deep, and it comes ready to hang out of the box. One nail, two minutes. No frame to buy, no glass bouncing your ceiling light back at you. The image wraps the sides, so there is no white border interrupting anything.

Most people take the 20 x 16 in landscape, 51 x 41 cm, which is the one already selected. It is $149, a high quality print of a digital artwork, made for you when you order, with free shipping in the continental US.

One honest thing

This is not restful art. It asks a question and never answers it. If you want a wall that stays quiet, pick something else.

If you like being asked about your art, take it home. Or go through the rest of Zara’s scenes first, and follow her, because the next title is usually the next clue.
