Indigo runs the whole picture. Not blue, not black. The deep wet indigo of a sky ten minutes after the rain stops, and every other colour in here has to argue its way out of it.
And one does. The temple gate timber is soaked vermillion, and wet vermillion against indigo glows almost molten — as if the gate itself were the lantern, lit from inside. The stone lanterns along the path are lit too. The ground gives all of it back in broad flat slabs of reflected colour.
The part most people walk past
Count what is actually in this painting. A gate. Some lanterns. One small figure with an umbrella, far away, walking off and not coming back. That is it. Most of the surface is empty, and Yuki means it to be. The empty part of the painting is not empty. It is doing the most work.
She always paints one figure. Never two. The scale of a room against the scale of a person — that is the whole subject, and the gate is just the thing holding it up. Valentina, who scored it, put it this way: “Yuki Tanaka captures the serene beauty of a rainy Kyoto evening with masterful precision.”
Once it is on your wall
It makes a hallway quieter. Under a warm bulb at night the vermillion comes forward and the indigo sinks back, so it reads differently at eight in the evening than at eight in the morning. Hang the middle of it at about eye level, roughly 58 inches off the floor, and you will never fuss with it again.
A high quality print of a digital artwork on smooth archival matte paper — non-reflective, so a lamp or a window opposite gives you the painting instead of a glare. Printed edge to edge, no white border, so it looks right pinned up bare or dropped into a frame you already own. It arrives rolled in a tube. Made to order, about ten business days, which means nobody on your street has this one. Free shipping in the continental US.
Portrait. 12 x 16 in (30 x 41 cm) at $29, 18 x 24 in (46 x 61 cm) at $49, 24 x 32 in (61 x 81 cm) at $69. That is the price — no bidding, no number you cannot trace. Most people take the 18 x 24. If it is going above a bed or at the end of a hallway, go bigger.
Who should skip it
If your wall is already crowded, or your room is full of colour, this will fight for air it cannot get. And if empty space reads as unfinished to you, this is not your painting. It wants a bare wall in a quiet room.
If that is your room, take it home. If you would rather sit with it first, there is more of Yuki’s rain to look at — or follow her, and the next one reaches you before it reaches anyone else.
One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.
Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 6 other works by Yuki Tanaka available.
