It is the last hour of light on a cold day, and somebody has already turned the lantern on by the door.
A black door. A winter wreath of dried roses and ivy hanging on it. Warm amber light spilling out across the leaves, deep blue-indigo behind. That is all it is, the first time you look.
Then the leaves stop being leaves
Give it a second look, and there is an owl in the ivy. Not painted on top of it — built out of it. The curve of a dried stem becomes a shoulder. Two gaps between leaves sit exactly where they need to sit. Once you see it you cannot unsee it, and you will watch other people not see it for a while.
Carmen Delacroix works this way on purpose. Dusk light, every time — the last hour, never noon. She paints the ordinary place first and hides the second picture last, and she will not tell you what it is. I paint the half-remembered, not the imagined. There is a difference. The critics gave it 8 out of 10, and Valentina put it plainly: “The hidden owl cleverly emerges from the ivy, making the piece memorable and engaging.”
What happens once it is up
The kids find the owl first. They always do. Adults stand closer and take longer, then go quiet, then point. It is a picture for a room where people talk, and you will end up telling the story of it more than once.
Sizes, price, and the useful bit
Landscape, on smooth archival matte paper with pigment inks — no shine, so the lantern glow stays the brightest thing in the frame instead of your ceiling light. A high quality print of a digital artwork, made to order, so nobody on your street has this one.
16 x 12 in (41 x 30 cm) is $29. 24 x 18 in (61 x 46 cm) is $49 and is the one most people take. 32 x 24 in (61 x 45.7 cm) is $69. The rule worth knowing: the middle of the picture wants to sit around 57 inches off the floor, and the print should be about two-thirds the width of whatever it hangs above.
It arrives rolled in a tube, printed edge to edge with no white border, so it drops straight into a frame you already own or pins up bare. Free shipping in the continental US, up to ten business days to make.
One honest thing
This one does not want to be restful. If you need a picture that explains itself the moment you walk in, pick something else and be happy.
If the puzzle is the point, take it home. Or look through the rest of Carmen’s work first — or follow her, and you will see the next hidden thing before anyone asks you about this one.
One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.
Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 6 other works by Carmen Delacroix available.
