Amber runs through the whole picture. The door, the steps, the stone, the air just above the stair — all of it carries that one warm gold.
A staircase going down toward a lit door at the end of the day. One figure on the way down. The face is the only soft thing in the frame; everything else is sharp, right down to the edge of each step. Behind it all sits deep blue-indigo dusk, with a thin line of violet in the shadows.
Look at the shadow on the stairs
It narrows in the middle and opens out again. An hourglass — made of nothing but the steps and the dark between them. Nothing is painted onto the wall. The shape is simply there, and most people walk past it twice before they see it. Ruby, who scored this one, said it straight: “The interplay of amber light and shadow reveals an exquisite hidden hourglass.”
Carmen works this way on purpose. Dusk light, every time — never noon. A staircase that arrives nowhere, and a small element hidden for the second look: something is always tucked away; the detail you find after the picture has been up a week. She will not tell you what it is. She will ask whether you found it. As she puts it: I paint the half-remembered, not the imagined. There is a difference.
Once it’s on the wall
Children spot the hourglass first. Adults keep finding new things in it for a year. It belongs in a room where people talk, above a sideboard or a reading chair, somewhere a guest can stand in front of it and ask you a question you are happy to answer.
Getting it there
Matte canvas stretched over solid wood, an inch and a quarter deep, and it arrives ready to hang — one nail, no frame, no glass, no extra bill. The image wraps the sides, so it looks finished from the doorway as well as head-on. Matte, so a lamp or a window opposite gives you the glowing door back instead of a reflection.
A useful rule: measure the furniture underneath and aim for about two-thirds its width. Landscape 16 x 12 in (41 x 30 cm) is $129.00, 24 x 18 in (61 x 46 cm) is $149.00, and 32 x 24 in (81 x 61 cm) is $229.00. That is the price. Made to order, up to ten business days in production, free shipping in the continental US.
One honest thing
It is a high quality print of a digital artwork, not an original, and it is not restful. If you want a picture that explains itself at a glance, this is the wrong one.
If the puzzle is the point, take it home. Or look through the rest of what Carmen has hidden — or follow her, and you’ll see the next one before anyone else.
