It belongs above the coffee maker. Right there, at the spot where you stand every morning with one eye open, waiting for the machine to finish.

A man in a guayabera is filling a 1950s convertible. Not from a pump. From a cafecito cup, tipped carefully into the tank like it will get him to Hialeah and back.

The bit people describe twice

Everything in the picture is black stencil on sun-bleached plaster – cream that has cracked, a patch someone painted over and gave up on, soft overspray at the edges where the spray drifted, a couple of drips left in. All of it quiet. Then the cup is electric turquoise, and it is the only colour in the whole frame.

That is the joke doing its work. Your eye has nowhere else to land. The man stays a shape against the light – no face, could be anybody’s uncle – so the cup gets to be the loudest thing on the wall. Charlotte called it “a brilliant pop of color contrasting against the crisp black stencil.” Ruby called it “a delightful visual punchline.”

Luna Vasquez works this way every time. One cut stencil, a wall that has seen things, one hot colour, no words. Deadpan and never cute.

What happens once it is up

Guests find it before they find the snacks. Anyone who has ever lived in Miami laughs out loud, then explains it to whoever came with them. It is the kind of thing people photograph and send to a group chat before they sit down.

Getting it on the wall

Canvas, stretched over solid wood an inch and a quarter deep, and it arrives ready to hang – one nail, two minutes, no frame to buy. The image wraps the sides, so there is nothing raw to look at from the doorway. Matte, so the window across the kitchen gives you the painting back instead of a glare. Made to order, which means nobody else on your street has it.

The 20 x 16 in (51 x 41 cm) landscape is preselected and it is the one most people take, $149, high quality print of a digital artwork, free shipping in the continental US. Go bigger at 24 x 18 if the wall is wide. Allow up to ten business days to make it, plus delivery.

One honest thing

This is a joke first. If you want calm and abstract above the counter, it will talk too much. If you like a wall that says something dry before you have finished your coffee, take it home. Or go see the rest of what Luna has made – follow her and you get the next one before it goes up anywhere else.
