Think of the narrow bit of wall near the table, the one people end up standing at with a drink instead of sitting down.

That is where this one wants to live. A tango couple mid-step in a café by the sea, her yellow dress swinging wide, chairs shoved back behind them, dusk coming through the window.

Nobody in it is looking at you

That is deliberate. Isabelle catches people between beats, never posed, never turned toward the room. He is holding her, she is already halfway into the next step, and neither of them has any idea you are there. You get to watch instead of being greeted.

Now look at the dress. The yellow is loaded on thick, in ridges, while everything around it is loose and quick. That is the whole reason it works. Your eye reads that built-up paint as fabric still travelling, so the skirt keeps swinging after the rest of the picture has gone still. As one of our critics, Ruby, put it: “The palette-knife accents on the dress bring a vivid sense of movement.”

The colour is not honest to life and does not pretend to be. Cadmium red, cobalt, a violet shadow no evening ever made. That is Isabelle’s Riviera – warmer and louder than the real one.

What it does at four in the afternoon

Afternoon light pushes the yellow forward and the room feels busier, in a good way. People ask about it before they ask about anything else. You will end up telling them what is happening in the picture, and you will enjoy it.

Getting it up there

Matte canvas with a visible weave, so the surface reads as paint rather than a photo of paint, and no window opposite will bounce a lamp back at you. It comes stretched over solid wood, an inch and a quarter deep, with the image running round the sides – one nail, two minutes, no framer and no surprise bill. A high quality print of a digital artwork, made to order, so nobody else on your street will have it.

Most people take the 16 x 20 in (41 x 51 cm) at $149. Go up to 18 x 24 in (46 x 61 cm) if the wall is wide. Free shipping in the continental US, and up to ten business days to make it.

One honest thing

This is loud. If you like your rooms pale and quiet, it will fight you. If you want the wall to move, take it home – or look through the rest of what Isabelle has made, and follow her, so the next café turns up in your feed first.
