Carmen built the water last. The boat, the ropes, the willow branches hanging low over it – all of that came first. Then she went back into the ripples and put someone to sleep in them.
You will probably not see it straight away. Most adults don’t. It reads as water first: a rowing boat tied up at dusk, a lantern lit in the bottom of it, amber light spilling out across the surface and everything past that going deep blue.
Then the water gives it up
Somewhere in the pattern of the ripples there is a face lying on its side, eyes closed. It isn’t painted on. There is no line drawn for a nose, no eye set into the water. It’s only the gaps between the light bands, and once you have it you cannot lose it again.
That’s Carmen’s whole habit. She paints an ordinary quiet place, properly, so it stands on its own – then she hides one thing in the shadows and never tells you what it is. As one critic put it, “the hidden face emerges beautifully in the ripples, inviting discovery without overshadowing the serene scene.”
What happens in the room
The kids find it before you do. Then they drag someone over to the wall to prove it, and that person stands there far longer than they meant to. It’s a picture that gets talked about at eye level, not admired from the doorway.
