The hallway. Keys in one hand, phone still in the other, four seconds of wall between the front door and the rest of your evening.
That is where this one goes. A figure waiting at a bus stop, drawn as a flat grey silhouette on flat grey ground, turned away, no face. Then colour erupts out of the headphones – Lagos orange, magenta, cyan, yellow – poured and sprayed, dripping down the grey.
Look at which way it’s going
The burst doesn’t wrap around the listener. It leaves. It travels outward, away from the head, so the headphones read as a source and not a pattern. Anyone who has stood at a stop at 7:40am with a track going will clock that in a second. The colour is the idea leaving his head.
Then look where the spray edge meets the vector edge. Soft overspray on one side, razor-clean line on the other, touching. There’s a drip sitting under a clean line, which tells you the spray went down first and the line came after. Kai Reynolds builds the grey world exactly, then lets one thing go. As he puts it: grit and geometry are not opposites. They are the same argument.
Charlotte, one of our critics, scored this 8.33/10 and said it straight: “The vibrant paint splash bursting from the headphones makes the piece come alive.”
Out of the box and onto the nail
It’s a high quality canvas print of a digital artwork, stretched over solid wood an inch and a quarter deep, and the image carries round the sides – so it looks finished from the doorway, with no frame to buy and no framer to visit. One nail, two minutes. Matte surface, so a lamp or a window opposite gives you the painting back instead of a glare.
Portrait. 12×16 in (30×41 cm) at $129, 18×24 in (46×61 cm) at $149, 24×32 in (61×81 cm) at $229. Most hallways want the 18×24. Go to 24×32 if the wall is wider than a doorway. Made to order, up to ten business days plus delivery, free shipping in the continental US – and nobody else on your street will have it.
Who should leave it alone
It is loud. In a soft, traditional room with florals and warm wood, it will pick a fight. In a hallway, a loft, a first flat with hard surfaces, it does exactly what it’s for: energy without a slogan.
Take it home if that’s your wall. If you’re still deciding, go through the rest of Kai’s grey-world pieces – or follow him and you’ll see the next burst before anyone else does.
