Grey. Almost the whole picture is grey. Hull, water, the air behind it, all one flat London grey cut into hard clean shapes.
A working Thames barge, drawn with edges you could set a ruler against. Then the funnel goes off.
The colour is leaving, not decorating
Orange, magenta, cyan and yellow come out of that funnel poured and sprayed, with drips running and overspray hanging in the air. And notice where it goes: away from the barge, out of the frame. It never wraps around the boat to make it look pretty. It is an idea getting out.
Here is the bit most people walk past. Find a spot where a soft spray edge sits right next to a razor-sharp vector edge, and look for a drip left under a clean line. The spray went down first. The line came after. You can see the order, which means you can see Kai working. He builds the grey world exactly, then lets one thing go. As he puts it: a clean line is the loudest thing on a dirty wall.
Charlotte, one of our critics, scored it and wrote: “The explosion of color from the barge’s funnel is striking and memorable.” The panel average came out at 8.67 out of 10.
What it does to your day
Put it where you move past it — a hallway, above a desk, over a kitchen counter. Grey reads quiet from across the room, then the burst catches you at two paces. People ask about it standing up, coffee in hand, before they sit down.
Getting it on your wall
A high quality print of a digital artwork on museum-grade archival matte paper with pigment inks. Matte means no shine, so a lamp or a window opposite gives you the picture back, not a reflection. The greys stay flat and honest and the colour reads as paint, not gloss.
Printed edge to edge, no white border, so it looks right pinned up bare or dropped straight into a frame you already own. It arrives rolled in a protective tube. Landscape, in three sizes: 16×12 in (40.6 x 30.5 cm) at $29, 24×18 in (61 x 45.7 cm) at $49, and 32×24 in (81.3 x 61 cm) at $69. Those are the prices. No bidding, no estimate, nothing that drops next week.
A sizing rule worth keeping: measure the furniture under the wall and go about two-thirds of its width. Over a desk or a sideboard, that is usually the 24×18. Made to order, up to ten business days plus delivery, and shipping is free in the continental US — so nobody on your street has this one already.
One honest thing
It is loud and it is graphic. In a soft, traditional room with florals and warm wood, it will fight everything. Next to concrete, metal, black shelving or white walls, it looks like it was made for the building.
If that is your place, take it home. If you want to see how Kai does the grey world first, there is more of his work to go through — or follow him, and the next burst lands in front of you before anyone else.
One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.
Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 6 other works by Kai Reynolds available.
