First snow, and the light has only just started. The sea hasn’t decided to move yet.
One lamp post on the shoreline. The tide line below it. Above all of it, the aurora — green, magenta, cold blue — pouring across most of the frame while the water stays flat and pale.
The lamp is still on
That is the part you come back to. Morning is already here and nobody went out to switch it off. It glows for no one. A small human slip, left in the picture on purpose, and it makes the whole enormous sky above feel closer and lonelier at the same time.
Sofia works by taking things out. She pours the sky, lets it move, then paints three things and stops. As she says it: I took four hundred photographs of this horizon. The painting has two lines in it. Look at where water meets sky — that razor-sharp line is the only line in the piece, and it holds the whole flood of colour above it in place. Ruby, one of our critics, put it this way: “The aurora’s vibrant flow against the tranquil shoreline creates a captivating tension.”
What it does at six in the morning
Hang it where people breathe — a bedroom, a bathroom, the end of a hall. Under a lamp the poured colour reads deep, almost wet. In daylight the pale gold at the water’s edge comes forward. Somewhere for your eye to rest, which, as Sofia says, calm is not the absence of anything. It takes work.
Getting it up
A high quality print of a digital artwork on matte canvas, stretched over solid wood an inch and a quarter deep, with the image carried round the edges — so there is no white border staring at you and no frame to buy. It arrives ready to hang. One nail, done before the kettle boils. Matte, so a window opposite gives you the aurora back instead of your own ceiling light.
Portrait. Most people take the 18×24 (46 x 61 cm) — the middle size, and the one that holds a bedside wall. A tip worth keeping: put the middle of the picture at eye height, not up near the ceiling where pictures usually drift. $149, and that is the price. Made to order, up to ten business days in production, so nobody on your street has this one. Free shipping in the continental US.
Who should skip it
Not for a busy room or a bold interior, and not for anyone who wants a picture to do the talking. It is quiet on purpose.
If that sounds like your wall, take it home. If you’d rather sit with it, look through the rest of Sofia’s Nordlys Flow pieces — or follow her, and the next sky lands in front of you first.
