Think of the wall you pass on the way to the kitchen, the one you stopped noticing years ago.
This is Valletta from the water, at the minute the day hands over. Honey stone stacked up out of dark water. A dghajsa low in the foreground. And on the steps, one street lamp, just lit.
The thing most people miss
That lamp is the only warm light left in the picture. Everything else has already gone cool and blue. Marco painted it that way so your eye keeps landing there, the way it does when you are standing on a quay and the light changes while you are talking to someone.
Look at the sky where orange meets deep blue. The join is unblended. The decision was made once and left; nothing was smoothed after. Look at the water and you will find a ridge where the knife lifted off, thick enough to cast its own shadow under a lamp. As Marco says it: I do not own a brush. Everything here came off the knife. And: this light has been the same for six hundred years. I am just the latest watching.
He never takes the postcard angle. You are one table back, one step down, where you actually stood.
In your room, by evening
Warm light finds the ridges and the water starts moving. The critic Ruby put it plainly: “The knife work in the water reflections creates a dynamic sense of movement and light.” If you have been to Malta, guests will ask before they sit down.
Getting it up there
A high quality print on matte stretched canvas, an inch and a quarter deep, image wrapping the edges. It arrives ready to hang, so one nail and you are done, no framer and no bill you did not plan for. Matte means a window opposite gives you the harbour back, not your own lamp.
Landscape 16×12 in is $129, 24×18 in (61 x 46 cm) is $149, 32×24 in is $229. A rule worth keeping: measure your sofa or sideboard and go about two thirds of its width. That usually lands people on the 20×16. Made to order, up to ten business days plus delivery, free shipping in the continental US. The price you see is the price.
One honest thing
This is a loud, textured surface. In a cool, minimal room that wants everything smooth and quiet, it will fight you. In a living or dining room with warm light and wood in it, it settles in and stays.
Take it home if that is your room. If you are still thinking, look at the rest of Marco’s harbours, or follow him and you will see the next lamp come on before anyone else does.
