Look at the foot. One of them is off the ground.
The pelican is standing at a ventanita window with a coffee cup in its bill, weight shifted onto one leg, the way anybody stands when they have been in line four minutes longer than they planned. Luna could have drawn a bird holding a coffee. She drew a bird waiting its turn.
The only thing in it that isn’t black
The bird is cut as a flat black stencil, crisp at the edge with a soft haze of overspray around it and a few drips left where they fell. Behind it, sun-bleached pastel plaster, cracked, with a faded patch where something older got painted over. All of it quiet.
Then the cup. Thimble-sized, electric turquoise, flat and hot, and the only colour anywhere in the frame. That is Luna’s whole method: cut it clean, spray it on a wall that has seen things, give one element the loud colour and let it land the joke. No words. Nothing explained.
