The moth has just landed on the sill, and it is not going to move again tonight.
Inside, one candle. Outside, the cold. The frost has closed over the glass and the whole window has gone quiet, warm amber in the middle, deep blue-indigo at the edges.
Look again at the frost
Carmen didn’t paint the frost as one white wash. She built it crystal by crystal, and each spike catches its own separate fleck of candlelight. So your eye reads it slowly, one crystal at a time. Then you stop reading and see the whole pattern at once — and the moth’s wings and the ice together make a keyhole.
Nobody announces it. Children find it first, every time, and then the adults keep finding new bits of it for a week. Valentina, one of our critics, put it plainly: “The hidden keyhole formed by the frost and moth is a delightful discovery.” The piece averages 8/10.
This is how Carmen works. Dusk light, every time — the last hour of light, never noon. She builds the ordinary scene first and hides the second picture last, and she will never tell you what it is. “I paint the half-remembered, not the imagined. There is a difference.”
Where it goes
It’s portrait, so it likes the narrow spots other pictures can’t take — above a side table, at the end of a hallway, on the strip of wall beside a bed. A useful rule: put the middle of the picture at standing eye height, not up near the ceiling. This one rewards being close.
The plain facts
A high quality print of a digital artwork on museum-grade archival matte paper. Smooth and non-reflective, which means a lamp or a window opposite gives you back the candlelight instead of a glare. Printed edge to edge, no white border, so it sits right in a frame you already own — or pinned up bare, which honestly suits it.
12×16 in (30×41 cm) $29. 18×24 in (46×61 cm) $49, the size most people take. 24×32 in (61×81 cm) $69. That is the price on the work and the price you pay. Made to order, up to ten business days plus delivery, and shipping is free within the continental US.
One honest thing
This is for a room where people talk, and for someone happy to be asked about it. It is not for a room that wants to be restful, or for anyone who needs a picture to explain itself at first glance.
If that sounds like your wall, take it home. If you’d rather sit with it, look through the rest of what Carmen has made — or follow her, and you’ll see the next hidden thing before anyone points it out.
One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.
Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 6 other works by Carmen Delacroix available.
