It has been raining long enough that the stone has given up and turned into a mirror.
You are standing at the mouth of the torii tunnel at Fushimi. Orange gate, then another, then another, each one a little smaller, until the rain closes over them and the colour goes soft. Somewhere deep inside, there is an umbrella. One person, walking away from you.
How far in did you have to look?
Most people miss the figure on the first pass. Yuki put them further down the tunnel than they need to be — small enough that you have to hunt, and once you find them you start doing sums. How many gates are behind them. How many more are ahead. The picture never answers, and that is exactly why your eye goes back in.
Look at what the orange is sitting on, too. She starts from indigo, always, so the gates are not orange against blue — they are warm light fighting a wet evening. The wet stone is laid on in thick knife slabs, so the reflections have real weight to them. As one critic put it, the texture “creates a powerful invitation into a rain-soaked journey.”
What happens once it is up
In a hallway it works like a window at the far end. You walk past, the tunnel pulls, and you slow down without deciding to. People stop in front of it and ask where the path goes. Nobody has a good answer.
