The pink does not ask permission.

It runs the whole picture, top to bottom, hot magenta dragged fast in one direction and never tidied up afterwards. There is a heavier mass answering it, sitting lower, holding on. Everything else is space.

Go stand close to the left edge

That is where the colour spreads past where it should have stopped, feathering out into bare canvas. It still looks wet there. You can see the exact spot where the knife lifted off and left the paint to finish the sentence on its own. Anya does not go back and fix that. In her work the overspill is the point – one big gesture, one thing answering it, and no apology in between.

One critic called it paint as appetite. That is fair. It looks like wanting something and not bothering to hide it.

What happens when it’s up

Conversations stop. Somebody walks in, keeps talking for half a second, then doesn’t. That’s the piece doing its job. Late in the day, when the light comes across the wall at an angle, the ridges catch and the surface reads even thicker than it did at noon.

Getting it on the wall

Canvas only, because paint moving at this scale flattens out on paper and stops being a painting. Poly-cotton with a visible weave, stretched over solid wood an inch and a quarter deep, image wrapping the sides so there is nothing to frame and nothing to buy after. It arrives ready to hang – one nail, two minutes. Matte, so a window opposite gives you the pink back instead of a reflection of your lamp.

Portrait. Most people take the 18×24 (46 x 61 cm), and it’s the one already selected. Go to 24×32 (61 x 81 cm) if the wall is tall and empty. $149 for the 18×24, free shipping in the continental US. One honest thing

This is loud. If you like a room quiet and grey, it will fight you every day. If you want the wall to have a pulse, take it home – or go look at the rest of Anya’s work, and follow her, so you see the next one before it goes up.
