It is the last twenty minutes of sun, and she is up on the roof with the whole city in front of her.
She is turned away from you, toward the skyline. Behind her the ground goes flat orange, one simple city shape cut into it, and out of her hair the colour starts going off like a flare — magenta, cobalt, gold, emerald, brushed loose and fast over a thick black outline.
Look at where the colour starts
Most people read the bloom as background. It isn’t. It rises exactly where her gaze goes. Follow her eyeline and the brightest colour is already sitting there waiting, which means you are not watching a woman in front of a sunset. You are watching her make one. Sunset stops being weather and becomes hers.
Naomi Brooks paints like this on purpose. The colour always grows out of the figure, never decorates the edge. And you never get her face — in profile, turned, out of reach. I keep the face out of reach. The body says enough. Ruby, scoring it an 8, put it this way: “The expressive eruption of color creates an energetic dialogue between the figure and the sky.”
What happens once it is up
Mornings it reads graphic and clean. Late afternoon the orange picks up your lamp light and the whole wall warms a shade. People ask about her. Nobody asks who she is for long, because she clearly isn’t posing for anyone.
Getting it on the wall
A high quality print of a digital artwork on museum-grade archival matte paper, printed edge to edge with no white border — so the orange runs right to the corners, and it sits properly in any frame you already own, or goes up bare with four pins and looks deliberate. Matte and non-reflective: hang it opposite a window and you still see her, not your ceiling light.
Landscape, in three sizes — 16×12 in, 24×18 in (61 x 46 cm) and 32×24 in. A quick rule: go about two-thirds the width of whatever furniture sits under it. Most people land on the middle one at $49.00. That is the price, no bidding, no estimate. Made to order, up to ten business days plus delivery, free shipping in the continental US — and nobody on your street will have this one.
One honest thing
She is loud. If every colour in your home is beige and careful, this will talk over all of it. In a first apartment, a study, a bedroom with anything warm in it, she takes about a week to belong there.
If that sounds like your room, take her home. If you are circling, go see the rest of Naomi’s blooms first — or follow her, and the next one lands in front of you before anyone else sees it.
One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.
Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 6 other works by Naomi Brooks available.
