Ninety seconds. That is how long the train is over the water, and she spends every one of them turned to the window.
You get her in profile, cut at the collarbone, drawn in a thick black line with deep warm skin. Behind her the river is one flat band. The bridge steel is reduced to almost nothing. And out of her hair, magenta, cobalt, gold and emerald come up like weather.
The part you only see once somebody says it
Watch which way the blooms lean. They go toward the glass. The colour is not sitting on her head like a hat, it is pouring out of her and out the window, in the same direction she is looking. The flowers are doing her looking for her. That is what she is thinking, painted.
Naomi Brooks will not give you the face. “I keep the face out of reach. The body says enough.” The face stays out of reach, so the woman is fully present without being handed over to you, and the colour always grows out of the figure, never decorates the edge. Ruby, scoring it 8.67 overall, put it this way: “The piece erupts with color, making it feel alive and energetic.”
Getting it up
Matte canvas with a visible weave, stretched an inch and a quarter deep over solid wood, and the image wraps the sides, so there is no white border and nothing to buy before it looks finished. It arrives ready to hang straight from the box. One nail. Matte means a lamp or a window opposite gives you the blooms back, not a glare.
Portrait, so it wants a narrow strip of wall rather than a wide one. 12×16 in (30×41 cm) is $129, 18×24 in (46×61 cm) is $149, 24×32 in (61×81 cm) is $229. A high quality print of a digital artwork, made to order in up to ten business days, free shipping in the continental US.
One honest thing
It is loud. If you want art that agrees with your sofa, this one will argue. If you want the wall to feel more confident than you did this morning, it is already there.
Take it home, or go through the rest of the Bloom Profile pieces first. Follow Naomi and you will see the next one before anybody else does.
