Someone is putting live birds on a shelf, in order, and taking it very seriously.

The library is charcoal and indigo, dark as a theatre before the curtain. The figure stands mid-task, face turned away, reduced to a few strokes of paint. And one bird burns vermillion, right in the middle of all that shadow, refusing to be filed.

Look at the third book along

One book has torn sideways. Pixel blocks, red and blue split apart, like the picture snagged on something. Everything else in the frame behaves like paint – the weave, the brush marks, the soft dark. Just that one book has stopped being a painting.

Zara Moon does this on purpose. She writes the title first, builds the scene like a stage set, obeys one impossible rule all the way to the end, and glitches exactly one thing so you know whose it is. Ruby put it well: the vermillion bird draws the eye and holds it, against a palette that gives it nothing to compete with.

What happens once it is up

People walk over to it. Then they lean in, because the joke has a second floor – the glitching book – and finding it takes a moment. You will be asked about this one more than anything else you own.

Getting it on the wall

Matte canvas, stretched over solid wood an inch and a quarter deep, and it comes ready to hang out of the box. One nail, no framer, no surprise bill. Matte means a lamp or a window opposite gives you the dark library back instead of a reflection.

Landscape. Most people take the 20 x 16 inch (50.8 x 40.6 cm) at $149 – it holds a hallway or the space above a console. It is a high quality print of a digital artwork, made to order, so nobody on your street has it. Free shipping in the continental US.

One honest thing

It is dark, and it is strange. If you like art that stays quiet and matches the cushions, this is not that. If you like being asked questions, take it home – or look through the rest of Zara’s scenes, and follow her so the next one lands in front of you first.
