Four in the afternoon, the light goes low and sideways, and the orange behind that mask starts doing something to your kitchen.
The turquoise cools off. The hot pink holds on. You look up from the sink and the wall is warmer than it was an hour ago.
What is actually going on here
A lucha libre mask, sitting alone on a bus-stop bench. Nobody on the bench. Just the mask, laces and eyeholes, painted with a fat black brush line that wobbles the way a real hand wobbles. Spray colour behind it, drips running where Chris let them run. Two words lettered right into the bench slats, in perspective with the wood: SIN MIEDO.
Look at the shadow
It falls forward. Off the bench, toward you, like whoever was wearing it just stood up and walked out of the frame. That is the whole joke and the whole heart of it. The mask is a ghost of the guy, and an empty bench says fearless louder than any fighter standing there with his fists up would.
Chris works one way and stops. Character once, fat brush. Colour sprayed behind it. One phrase, and then he puts the brush down. Ruby called it captivating and memorable, and it is the shadow doing that.
Getting it up there
