The kitchen light is off and the chairs are going up, and the two of them have decided that isn’t their problem.
Somebody put a song on. They are dancing between the tables, arms out, heads tipped back, mid-laugh. One of them has kicked a shoe off and left it lying where it landed.
Look at the shoe
It sits in a shadow that is green. Not brown, not grey – green, a colour no floor has ever made. Isabelle does that on purpose. She puts one impossible colour in the picture and lets it hold everything else in place, so the shoe stops being a sad little object on the tiles and becomes the anchor of the whole composition.
It is also the permission. Someone took a shoe off. That is the moment the evening stopped being an evening out and became theirs. You will describe that shoe to somebody, and then you will describe it again.
Neither woman looks out at you. Isabelle never lets them. She catches the dancer between beats and never asks her to look up, which is why the room in the painting feels like a room you walked into rather than a scene arranged for you.
What happens once it’s up
Cadmium red, chrome yellow, cobalt. It puts noise on a quiet wall. Hallways, kitchens, the bit of wall by the coffee machine – anywhere you pass at speed and could use the lift.
Getting it there
A high quality print of a digital artwork on museum-grade archival matte paper, portrait, printed edge to edge with no white border – so the colour runs right to the paper’s edge and nothing interrupts it. Matte and non-reflective, which means a window opposite gives you the dancers back instead of your own ceiling light.
It arrives rolled in a tube, ready for a frame you already own or bare on the wall with four pins. Made to order, so nobody down your street has it. Free shipping in the continental US.
11×14 in (28×36 cm) is $29. The 16×20 in (41×51 cm) is $49 and it’s the one most people take. 18×24 in (46×61 cm) is $69 for a bigger stretch of wall.
One honest thing
This is loud. If your rooms are all soft greys and you like them that way, it will fight you. If you own anything patterned, it will get along fine.
Take it home if that sounds like your kitchen. If you’re still deciding, go through the rest of Isabelle’s cafe pieces – or follow her, and the next dancer turns up in your feed first.
One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.
Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 6 other works by Isabelle Moreau available.
