The petals get there before she does.
A loose trail of them, scattering behind a woman running for the tram in Nice. Market flowers still clamped in her arms, her dress lifted off her legs mid-stride, one heel already off the ground. She is going to make it. The flowers are a secondary concern.
What you notice the second time
Her face is turned away. She is looking down the line, not at you, and that is deliberate — I paint the ten seconds before they notice you are there. Isabelle does this in every picture she makes. Nobody poses. Nobody looks up.
Then look at the shadow under her. It is violet. Not grey, violet, laid straight against cadmium orange and chrome, and nothing in real life is that colour. Stand in Nice at four in the afternoon and it is exactly right anyway.
Charlotte, one of our critics, put it this way: “The movement is everything—cloth airborne, flowers spilling color, and one heel just leaving the ground.” Her score on this one was part of a 7.67 average.
What happens once it is up
It wants a kitchen, a bedroom, or the corner where you actually read. Hang it where you pass rather than where you sit — the movement does more work out of the corner of your eye. Guests ask about the petals. You will end up telling them about the tram.
The practical part
A high quality print of a digital artwork on museum-grade archival matte paper. Matte and non-reflective, so an overhead lamp gives you the orange back instead of a hot white spot. Printed edge to edge, no white border, so it looks right pinned up bare or dropped into a frame you already own — nothing to buy, nothing to measure.
Portrait. The middle size, 18 x 24 in (46 x 61 cm), suits most walls and is already selected; 12 x 16 in (30 x 41 cm) for a narrow strip of wall, 24 x 32 in (61 x 81 cm) if it is going above a bed or a sideboard. $49 for the middle size, $29 and $69 for the other two. That is the price — no bidding, no estimate, nothing to haggle.
It is made for you after you order, up to ten business days in production plus delivery, rolled in a tube. Free shipping in the continental US. A hanging rule while you wait: centre the picture about 57 inches from the floor and it stops looking like it is floating.
One honest thing
This is loud. Orange, chrome yellow, violet. In a cool, minimal or corporate room it will fight everything and lose. If your place has wood, books, mismatched chairs or any colour at all, it settles in fast.
If that is your kitchen, take it home. If you want to see more first, Isabelle has a whole set of people caught mid-movement — or follow her at @isabelle.moreau and you will see the next one before it goes up here.
One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.
Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 6 other works by Isabelle Moreau available.
