Lamp Waiting Alone – Sofia Larsson | Fine Art Print

It is the end of a winter afternoon, and the light has already gone out of the water.

A ferry pier. One lamp on it, burning gold. The sky above is pouring green and magenta and cold blue, and the water underneath is so still it hands the whole thing back to you in reverse.

The thing you notice second

The lamp is the only warm thing in the picture. Everything else is cold – and it is small, far off, nowhere near the middle. Sofia put almost nothing else in the frame on purpose. “Almost nothing else” is the work: what was taken out. The horizon line is the only line in there, razor sharp where all that colour stops.

Then you see the reflection, and the lamp is doubled, and so is how alone it looks. Ruby, one of our critics, scored this 8 and wrote: “The flowing auroras and the warm glow of the lamp create a serene yet dynamic focal point.”

Sofia says it plainly. I took four hundred photographs of this horizon. The painting has two lines in it. And: Calm is not the absence of anything. It takes work.

What happens once it is up

Hang it where you want to breathe out. Over a bed, in a bathroom, along the hallway you walk at night. A guest will ask about the lamp before they ask about the sky. Everybody does.

Paper, price, done

A high quality print of a digital artwork on archival matte paper with pigment inks – smooth and non-reflective, so a lamp opposite gives you the aurora back, not a glare. Printed edge to edge, no white border, so it looks right slipped into a frame you already own or pinned up bare.

Landscape. 16×12 in / 40.6×30.5 cm is $29. Most people take the 24×18 in / 61×45.7 cm at $49. Go 32×24 in / 81.3×61 cm, $69, if the wall is wider than the bed. Made to order, up to ten business days, rolled in a tube, free shipping in the continental US.

Who should skip it

A busy room will swallow it. If you want a picture to do the talking, this one stays quiet on purpose.

If that quiet is what you are after, take it home. Or look through the rest of Sofia’s horizons first – or follow her, and the next sky arrives before anyone else sees it.

One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.

Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 6 other works by Sofia Larsson available.
