Four in the afternoon in winter, lamps not on yet, and the wall has gone the same colour as the sky inside the picture.
A lighthouse standing in fresh snow. The beam has just been lit. Below it the sea has gone pewter. Above it, most of the picture is aurora, green and magenta and a cold blue, pouring across the top like something still moving.
Come back and look at the door
There is a wreath on the keeper’s door. Small. It is the only warm thing a person made in the whole frame, and Sofia put it where you do not find it first. You see the sky. Then the snow. Then the door. After that you cannot stop seeing the door. Someone lives out there. Someone hung that up.
Everything else is the horizon line, which is often the only line she gives you. I took four hundred photographs of this horizon. The painting has two lines in it. She paints three things and stops. Ruby, one of our critics, signed her score at 8.33 and wrote: “The aurora in this piece is mesmerizing, harmonizing beautifully with the serene landscape.”
Getting it on the wall
It is a high quality print of a digital artwork on matte stretched canvas, an inch and a quarter deep, image wrapping the edges so there is no white border staring at you from the side. It arrives stretched and ready to hang. One nail, two minutes, no frame to buy. Matte, so a lamp or a window opposite gives you the aurora back instead of a bright white blob.
A rule worth keeping: hang the middle of the picture at eye height, around 57 inches off the floor. Over a bed, leave a hand’s width above the headboard.
Portrait, 12×16 in (30×41 cm) at $129, 18×24 in (46×61 cm) at $149, 24×32 in (61×81 cm) at $229. Most bedrooms take the 16×20. That is the price, plainly, with no bidding and no number nobody can explain. Made to order, up to ten business days in production plus delivery, so nobody on your street has this one. Free shipping in the continental US.
One honest thing
It is mostly sky and snow. If you want a picture that does the talking, this is not it. Calm is not the absence of anything. It takes work. If you want less on the wall and you mean it, this is the one.
Take it home today, or spend five minutes in the rest of what Sofia has made. Following her works too, then the next quiet horizon reaches you first.
