This one goes where people eat and talk over each other.

The kitchen wall. The dining room wall. The bit of hallway you pass forty times a day carrying laundry. Somewhere the room is already moving, and the picture joins in instead of asking for quiet.

What is happening in it

A dancer stamps her heel down on a tiled floor, fan half open in her hand. She is not looking at you. She is mid-beat, and the whole thing is caught in the half-second before the next one.

The part you notice second

The wall behind her is chrome yellow, and it takes up two thirds of the picture. No real wall was ever that colour. That is the point – it is the loudest thing in the frame, so your eye has to fight its way down to the floor.

And that is where the trick is. The shadow under the stamped heel is violet. Impossible violet, laid in hard, so the foot looks like it just landed a half-second ago. Isabelle catches people between beats and never asks them to look up. As one critic put it, “the palette knife work on the red ruffles vividly captures the dancer’s motion.” You can see the ridges of it in the dress.

Getting it up

Canvas with a visible weave, so the surface reads as paint rather than a photo of paint, stretched over solid wood an inch and a quarter deep. The image wraps the edges and it arrives ready to hang – one nail, done before the kettle boils. Matte, so a window opposite gives you the yellow back and not your own ceiling light.

Landscape. Most people take the 20 x 16 in (51 x 41 cm) at $149. There is a 14 x 11 for a narrow stretch of wall and a 24 x 18 if you want it seen from the doorway. Made to order, so nobody on your street has this one, and shipping in the continental US is free.

One honest thing

It is loud. If you like a room hushed and pale, this will talk over it. If you like a room with some noise in it, take it home – or look at the rest of Isabelle’s dancers, and follow her, and you will see the next one first.
