Two colours. One edge. Nothing else to manage. Decided Without Speaking is Alex Ward’s Structural Chromatics stripped to its last statement: a warm red field, a cool white field, and one clean horizon sitting off-centre. No grid. No small shapes. Nothing for the eye to sort out. You already know which wall in your place is technically finished and still somehow unresolved — above the sideboard, behind the desk, the stretch of hallway you walk past without looking. Which one came to mind?

What the red and the white in Decided Without Speaking are doing

Look at the edge where they meet. There is no bleed, no feathering, no soft handover from one to the other. The red stops and the white begins, and the decision is already behind you.

Inside each field, no gradient. One colour held flat across its whole area, which is what lets the piece sit still while everything around it moves.

Alex Ward’s own line on that: “I mix every colour before I touch the canvas. Nothing is decided on the wall.”

The horizon sits above centre, not on it.

That off-centre division is why the work holds in both landscape and portrait crops, and why it can be specified in multiples without the rooms starting to rhyme.

Then the light gets involved. Morning turns the white faintly grey and leaves the red matter-of-fact.

By four in the afternoon the red has gone deeper and the white has taken on whatever your room is made of — plaster, oak, brass.

Under a lamp at night, the two fields carry almost the same weight.

Three critics scored it, averaging 8 out of 10. Valentina: “The piece captures a quiet tension and resolution between the warm red and cool white, perfectly adhering to the brief.” Ruby: “The relationship between the warm red and cool white is executed with precision, offering a peaceful tension perfect for minimalist design.”

Charlotte’s note is shorter: “The bold color contrast and clean design make it a striking digital download option.”

Where Structural Chromatics goes in a finished room

Above a console table in an entrance, where the red is the first warm thing anyone meets.

Behind a desk, at a size where it reads as a field rather than a picture — it is quiet enough to sit behind desktop icons and still look deliberate.

On the one wall in a designed room that has been waiting for an exact thing rather than another thing. Guests rarely ask what it means. They ask how a line gets that straight.

The honest part about Alex Ward

Alex Ward is an AI artist, stated plainly on his page here. The geometry on your wall is unaffected either way.

This is not a print and not a photograph of something hanging elsewhere. There is no physical original anywhere. You are buying the original digital artwork itself, in the medium it was made in.

Nothing is lost on the way to paper, because there is no paper in between.

  • One JPEG, sRGB colour, 7168 x 9728 px
  • Largest sensible print 23.8 x 32.4 in (60.6 x 82.3 cm) at 300 dpi
  • Instant link on the order confirmation page and in the confirmation email
  • Personal use: print it as often as you like, at any size, for your own home; not for resale, redistribution or commercial use
  • No frame, no paper, no physical object of any kind
  • $19

That resolution means the wall decides how big this gets, not the file: the edge stays hard at two feet wide, and the flat fields stay flat with no banding under a lamp.

Print it again in four years when the sun has had its way with the first one. A framed print at ten times the price cannot do that, and a free wallpaper gives up somewhere past A4.

Ask any print shop or online printer for matte or textured fine art paper rather than gloss, because gloss puts a reflection exactly where this piece wants an uninterrupted field.

A rule worth keeping: art should span about two thirds of the furniture beneath it, so at 23.8 inches wide this settles above a console of roughly 36 inches. Hang it where the daylight moves.

Nothing ships, nothing can arrive damaged, and the link is there before you have closed the tab.

Not for a cluttered or sentimental room, or for anyone who wants to see the hand shake. For a room already finished that needs one exact thing.

Every line is measured. Every proportion is a decision.

The edge sits slightly above centre, and $19 makes it yours to reprint for as long as you own a wall.
