Somebody has just gone inside and switched the lights on.
A small red boathouse in the snow. One string of warm bulbs along the front of it. The water in front is holding completely still, and above all of it the sky is pouring — green, magenta, cold blue, running into each other like something wet. Almost nothing else is in the frame. That is on purpose.
The thing most people miss
Look at where the water meets the sky. That line is razor sharp, and everything above it is soft. Sofia puts it that way herself: I took four hundred photographs of this horizon. The painting has two lines in it.
Then find the lights again. They are the only warm thing in the whole picture — pale gold winter light at the water’s edge, warmth without heat. Ruby, one of our critics, said it plainly: “The artwork beautifully contrasts the warmth of the boathouse with the ethereal aurora.” Sofia’s other line is the one that sticks: Calm is not the absence of anything. It takes work.
What happens once it is up
It is a quiet picture, so it does quiet work. Over a bed, above a bath, at the end of a hallway you pass twenty times a day. Your eye lands on the lights first, every time, and then goes up into the sky and stays there a second longer than you meant it to. Guests ask about it in a lower voice than usual.
Getting it on the wall
Matte stretched canvas on solid wood, an inch and a quarter deep, and it arrives ready to hang straight from the box. One nail, two minutes, no frame to buy. The image wraps the edges, so it looks finished from the side too. Matte means a lamp or a window opposite gives you the aurora back instead of a bright white glare.
A rule worth keeping: hang art about two-thirds the width of whatever sits under it. Above a nightstand, 16 x 12 in (41 x 30 cm) at $129. Above a bed or a sofa, the 24 x 18 in (61 x 46 cm) at $149 — that is the one most people take. A wide wall on its own wants 32 x 24 in (61 x 45.7 cm) at $229. That is the price; nothing is bidding against you.
It is a high quality print of a digital artwork, made to order, up to ten business days in production plus delivery. Free shipping in the continental US.
One honest thing
This one will lose in a busy room. If your walls are already full, or your interior is bold and patterned, it will just look pale. It is for someone who wants less on the wall and means it.
If that is you, take it home. If you want to see the rest of the Nordlys Flow pieces first, they are all here — or follow Sofia and you will see the next horizon before anyone else does.
