Four in the afternoon, and the room goes quiet in a way you did not ask for.

The green in the sky picks up whatever light you have and holds it a little longer than the walls do. People sit down without meaning to.

What is happening in it

A lake, flat as glass. One jetty running out into it. One birch standing on its own. Above all of it, an aurora poured in green, magenta and cold blue, moving like it has somewhere to be. Pale gold light sits along the water’s edge, and the horizon is drawn so sharp it looks like a different painting met this one halfway.

The part you only see once someone says it

Follow the birch down. Its reflection keeps going, straight through the water, all the way to the bottom edge of the frame. One unbroken vertical line from top to bottom. That line is what holds the whole loose, flowing sky in place – without it, the aurora would just drift off the canvas. Collectors say the reflection is the moment they stopped scrolling.

Sofia Larsson works with almost nothing in the frame. She pours the sky, lets it move, then paints three things and stops. A jetty, a tree, a line of water. That restraint is hers.
