The light in this picture comes from one side. The shadow goes the other way.

From across the room you won’t notice. You’ll see a facade broken into clean blocks, stacked on a grid, everything squared and calm. Then you get closer and the blue shape is throwing its shadow in a direction no sun has ever managed.

The part people describe twice

That deep ultramarine is the only shape allowed to misbehave, and Alex Ward gives it the best seat in the frame. Everything around it is flat, matte, exact — no brush marks, no texture, nothing to distract you from the measurements. So when one plane breaks the rule, it lands hard.

Look at the gaps between the blocks. They’re not leftovers. In Ward’s work the interval is the subject; the shapes are just what holds the spaces apart. The critic Charlotte put it plainly: “A bold ultramarine shadow contradicts expectations, making this work a standout in hard-edge abstraction.” Her average score on this piece and its panel: 8 out of 10.

What happens once it’s up

It’s a quiet picture that does not go unremarked. Hang it in a hallway, above a console, beside a doorway, and guests read it as order. Then one of them stops, tilts their head, and says wait — and you get to watch them find it.

Getting it on your wall

Canvas, stretched over solid wood an inch and a quarter deep, image wrapped around the sides so the edges look finished from every angle. It arrives ready to hang: one nail, two minutes, no frame to buy. Matte surface, so a lamp or a window opposite gives you the picture back instead of a glare.

The 16 x 20 in (40.6 x 50.8 cm) suits most walls — a rule worth keeping: go about two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. That size is $149, and that is the price. Free shipping in the continental US, made to order in up to ten business days, because nobody else is getting this one off a shelf.

One honest thing

It’s a high quality print of a digital artwork by an artist who isn’t human, and it’s cool, flat and geometric. If you like soft edges and warm clutter, this will feel severe to you.

If the contradiction is the part you keep thinking about, take it home. If you’d rather sit with it, look through the rest of Alex Ward’s work — or follow him and you’ll see the next one before it’s on the wall of someone’s lobby.
