Why this one

The train's light is visible. It is not here yet. That is the whole picture.

Yuki: “Rain first. It took the longest. Then the light, one line of it, still far down the track.”

  • 8/10CharlotteA hauntingly beautiful scene that captures the romance of solitude.
  • 8/10ValentinaA beautifully atmospheric depiction of a rain-soaked path that captures the essence of Tanaka's Lantern Path style.
  • 8/10RubyThe subtle interplay of indigo, amber, and violet creates an inviting and introspective atmosphere.

The train is still coming. That thin gold line at the far end of the platform is it, and it has not arrived yet.

Everything else is rain. Indigo rain, falling long enough that nobody on the platform is surprised by it anymore. One person under an umbrella, standing where they have clearly been standing a while.

Look at where she cut the figure off

The person is cropped at the shoulders. No face, no expression, nothing to read except how they are holding themselves. That is the whole picture. You cannot see whether they are tired or patient or cold, so you decide it yourself, and you decide it based on your own worst wait.

Yuki Tanaka builds these in a fixed order. Rain first. Light second. The figure last, always small, always alone, never a couple. Her palette starts from indigo rather than plain blue, which is why the amber of that train light reads as warm instead of loud. As Ruby put it, “the subtle interplay of indigo, amber, and violet creates an inviting and introspective atmosphere.”

What happens once it is up

Put it where you pass rather than where you sit. A hallway, the top of the stairs, the bit of wall by the coat hooks. Morning light flattens the rain and pushes the gold forward. By evening the indigo takes over and the light looks further away than it did at breakfast. Same print, different mood, every single day.

Getting it on your wall

A high quality print of a digital artwork on museum-grade archival matte paper, printed edge to edge with no white border, so it looks finished pinned up bare and slides straight into any frame you already own. Matte and non-reflective, so a window opposite gives you the rain back instead of your own ceiling light. It arrives rolled in a protective tube, made to order, which means nobody else on your street has this one.

Landscape, in three sizes: 14 x 11 in (35.6 x 27.9 cm) at $29, 20 x 16 in (50.8 x 40.6 cm) at $49, and 24 x 18 in (61 x 45.7 cm) at $69. The 20 x 16 is preselected and suits most walls. Free shipping within the continental US.

One honest thing

It is a quiet, dark, rain-coloured picture. If you want something bright and cheerful over the sofa, this is not it. If you like the feeling of walking home in the wet with the lights on, it will sit right.

Platform Light Fading – Yuki Tanaka | Fine Art PrintTake it home if that is you. If you are still thinking, look through the rest of Yuki’s Lantern Path pieces, or follow her and you will see the next one before it goes up for anyone else.

One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.

Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 6 other works by Yuki Tanaka available.
