Put this at the end of the hallway, where the light is bad and nobody stops.

People will start stopping. Then they’ll stand there longer than they meant to.

It’s a rock pool at dusk. The beach has emptied out. One warm lamp glows somewhere off to the side and its amber runs across the wet stone into deep blue water. Rockweed hangs off the rocks the way real rockweed does — heavy, slick, dark green.

Then it turns into something else

Look again at the weed and the gaps between the rocks. There’s a cat in there. Curled up, asleep, tail tucked. Nobody painted a cat — the shape is made only of shadow, weed and the negative space around them. Which is why you don’t see it at first, and why you can’t unsee it after.

That’s Carmen Delacroix’s whole game. She builds an ordinary quiet place first, glazed dark to light so the lamp seems to burn from inside the picture, and hides the second image last. She won’t tell you what’s in there. She’ll just ask if you found it.

One critic called it “a serene scene with a delightful hidden cat, rewarding close inspection.” Kids find it in about four seconds. Adults take a week and feel cheated.

Getting it on your wall

Matte canvas, an inch and a quarter deep, wrapped over solid wood and stretched already — one nail and it’s up, no frame to buy, no glass. Matte means the window across the room gives you the water back instead of your own reflection. The image runs around the sides, so it looks finished from the doorway too.

Most people take the 16×20 (40 x 51 cm) at $149. It’s made to order, so give it up to ten working days, and shipping inside the continental US is free.

One honest thing

This is a dim picture. Blue, indigo, one pocket of gold. If you want something bright and cheerful over the breakfast table, it isn’t this. If you like a room that goes quiet at dusk, it’s exactly this.

Take it home, or go look at what else Carmen has hidden — following her means you see the next one before the rest of us do.
