One colour carries this whole picture, and it is the colour of old stone.

Dubrovnik’s walls run the full width of the frame, a single warm band of it, sitting flat and heavy over a blue harbour that has gone completely still. Above it the sky is turning orange. Below it the water is nearly dark.

Look at the one warm light

There is exactly one gateway lit in that long wall, and it is warmer than every other light in the picture. Marco does this in every harbour he paints. One lamp, one window, always just come on. Your eye finds it in about two seconds and then keeps going back, because it is the only place in the painting you could walk into.

Notice too that the wall never breaks. It reads as one unbroken stroke of stone holding everything level. That is why the piece feels calm instead of busy, even with all that colour in the sky. Charlotte, one of our critics, put it plainly: “Vivid colors and knife-cut reflections make this piece a standout portrayal of Dubrovnik’s historic charm.”

What happens once it is up

Stone Held Horizontal – Marco Bellini | Fine Art PrintIf you have walked those ramparts, you will stop in the hallway the first week and not know why. Anyone who hasn’t will just say the water looks warm. Both of those are the right answer.

Getting it on the wall

A high quality print of Marco’s digital painting on museum-grade archival matte paper. Non-reflective, so a lamp or a window opposite gives you the harbour back instead of a glare. It is printed edge to edge with no white border, so the stone runs right out to the sides. It comes rolled in a tube, unframed, which means it slides straight into a frame you already own, or goes up bare and looks completely at home.

Landscape. Most people take the 20 x 16 in (51 x 41 cm) for a hallway or above a sideboard, and that one is already selected. Go 24 x 18 in (61 x 46 cm) if the wall is wide. Small at 14 x 11 in (36 x 28 cm). The middle size is $49.00, and shipping inside the continental US is free. Each one is printed for you, so it is not sitting in a warehouse somewhere.

One honest thing

This is a warm picture. Ochre, terracotta, orange sky. If your room is all cool grey, it will speak louder than the rest of it.

Stone Held Horizontal – Marco Bellini | Fine Art PrintIf that sounds like your wall, take it home. If you would rather sit with it, look through the other harbours Marco has painted, or follow him and you will see the next town before anyone else does.

One is a piece. Two is a set. Three is a collection.

Almost nobody stops at one. A second work by the same hand turns a wall into a pairing. A third turns it into something you chose rather than something you bought. There are 6 other works by Marco Bellini available.
