Most pictures give you one thing to look at. This one gives you two people facing opposite directions, and then makes you stare at the space between them.
Two sisters in profile, each turned away from the other. Thick black contour, deep warm skin. Out of their hair, one bloom erupts — magenta, cobalt, gold, emerald, brushed loose and saturated — against a flat two-colour New York ground with one simple city shape behind them.
The thing you notice second
The bloom belongs to both of them. Naomi grew the colour out of one sister’s hair and finished it in the other’s, so they are physically joined by the one thing neither of them will look at. The gazes refuse each other. The colour refuses to let go. You cannot tell if they are growing together or pulling apart, and that is the whole picture.
Our critic Charlotte scored it and wrote: “The vibrant bloom of colors between the sisters draws in the eye like a magnet.” Average across the panel, 8.67 out of 10.
Naomi never lets you have the face. I keep the face out of reach. The body says enough. In her work the colour always grows out of the figure, never decorates the edge — that is how you know it is hers.
Once it’s on the wall
It wakes up a room at four in the afternoon. People stop in front of it and ask which one is which, then argue about it. Hang it above a bed, a desk, or the sofa you already have.
Getting it there
A high quality canvas print of a digital artwork, with a visible weave, stretched over solid wood an inch and a quarter deep. The image wraps the edges, so there is no white border and no frame to buy. It arrives ready to hang — one nail, two minutes. Matte, so a lamp opposite gives you the colour back instead of a glare.
Landscape. Most people take the 24 x 18 inch (61 x 46 cm) at $149. The 16 x 12 (41 x 30 cm) is $129 and sits well over a desk; the 32 x 24 (81 x 61 cm) is $229 if your wall is wider than your sofa. Free shipping in the continental US. Made to order, up to ten business days in production, which also means nobody on your street has this one. The price on the work is the price — no bidding, no number you can’t trace.
One honest thing
It is loud. If you want the wall to stay quiet and neutral, this will argue with you all day. And yes, it makes a good gift for a sister — ideally one you are currently on speaking terms with.
If that made you laugh, take it home. If you want to see more first, look at the rest of Naomi’s blooms — or follow her, and you’ll see the next one before anyone else.
