The coyote gets you first. Head tipped back, mouth wide open, one fat wobbly black brush-line against a sky that has gone orange, turquoise, purple and hot pink all at once.
It is howling at a moon drawn like neon. Underneath, the 101. You can hear it before you work out what you are looking at.
Read the hood
Now look lower, at the lowrider. Centered on the hood, painted in perspective with the surface, chrome and windshield drawn around it: LATE NIGHT. Two words, brush-lettered, slightly crooked. That is the whole piece. Chris never floats a caption over a picture. The phrase has to live on something in the scene, like somebody actually painted it on that car. A line of text doing more than decoration — read it, it is the point.
Then the edges. Spray bleeding under a hard stencil line, drips left where they fell, a torn edge with the older layer showing through, because a wall is never blank, it is a stack of what was there before. As he says it: I learned to make things fast because you do not get long on a wall.
The critics gave it 8.33 out of 10. Valentina put it this way: “This piece captures the essence of LA street culture with humor and bold color.”
Over the bar, over the fridge
It takes lamp light well. Matte canvas, so the bulb in the ceiling gives you the painting back instead of a white hot spot. Guests read the hood out loud. Every time.
The numbers, plainly
Poly-cotton canvas with a visible weave, stretched over solid wood an inch and a quarter deep, image wrapping the sides. One nail, two minutes, no framer and no surprise bill. A sizing rule that works: measure whatever it hangs above and take about two thirds of that width. 16×12 in (41×30 cm) is $129. 24×18 in (61×46 cm) is $149 and suits most walls. 32×24 in (81×61 cm) is $229. A high quality print of a digital artwork, made to order in up to ten business days, free shipping in the continental US. The price you see is the price — no auction, nobody bidding against you.
Who should skip it
If your room is matched, polished and calm, this will argue with it all day. It has an opinion and it says it loud.
If that sounds like your kitchen, take it home. If you want to sit with it, go look at the rest of Chris Vega’s work — or follow him, and you will see the next one before anybody else does.
